The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Certification exam certifies those who have successfully completed a training program. You’ve sat through all of your classes and now it’s time for you to take your certification exam. Taking any certification exam can be stressful, but before you start preparing, take a look at these tips we have for you that can help you successfully pass the MLT Certification exam.
1. Know the MLT Exam Content
It’s common knowledge that you’ll need to read, use a study guide and other materials to help you prepare for the MLT certification exam. But one of the important things when it comes to studying is that you need to know the content of the actual exam. Learning more about the actual exam can give you an idea as to what type of questions there will be, how many questions, and the format of the exam.
Here’s a few things that you need to know about the MLT test:
• It takes 3 hours to complete the MLT certification exam.
•There are 200-210 multiple-choice questions on the MLT exam.
• The MLT certification exam uses computer adaptive testing. The questions are adapted to your level know knowledge as you go through the exam.
2. Create a Study Plan
Start studying for the MLT exam a few months before you sit for the actual exam. This gives you enough time to study all of the content that is on the MLT Certification exam. It’s best to sit down with a calendar and block out two to three hours every day to sit down and study for the MLT exam. You should also include days where you review the material that you have studied a few days ago to help keep it fresh in your mind.
3. MLT Study Guide
A key component to successfully preparing for the MLT Certification exam is to study using a study guide. Using a study guide specifically created for the Medical Laboratory Technician Certification exam can help you dig a little deeper into the details of the concepts that you will find on the exam such as the types of microscopes or OSHA regulations. Using flashcards to prepare for an exam can help you in a variety of ways. One is that they are small enough to be easily taken with you when you’re on the go, so studying pretty much anywhere you go will be easy. Flashcards also help you retain information for a longer period of time. You focus on one key concept at a time rather than looking at a page filled with different information. This allows you to keep details and concepts organized which can prevent cramming and overwhelming your brain.
6. The MLT Exam is Computer Adaptive
Many exam-takers are given roughly the same format of an exam, but with the MLT Certification exam, each exam is different. This is because the MLT exam is computer adaptive. This means that if you are presented with a difficult question and choose the correct answer, you will be given another difficult question. Each question is assigned a level of difficulty and a content area that matches the content outline. The value of the question depends on how difficult that question is. So, in order to score above the passing point of the exam, you must answer enough difficult questions to achieve a higher score.
7. Divide Up the Material
The MLT Certification exam contains a lot of concepts that you’ll need to know such as general laboratory operations and microbiology. When you’re creating your study plan, divide up the different concept areas so that you only have one area to focus on each day. For example, one day you’ll study enzymes in chemistry and the next day you’ll study the physiology of the immune system. Doing this will help keep everything organized and can prevent you from becoming overwhelmed with the information.
8. MLT Practice Test
When you take a practice test, you’ll be given a lot of questions that are similar to those on the actual MLT Certification exam. You’ll get an idea as to the format of the questions and what type of questions you’ll be asked. Practice tests can also give you an idea as to what area of the exam you need more work on and which areas you are doing well on. Knowing which areas you need work on will allow you to add that to your study plan so that you can give yourself more time to work with that area.
