The Washington Educator Skills Tests–Endorsements (WEST-E) tests are designed to test the knowledge and educator skills of prospective teachers in the state of Washington. The WEST-E Social Studies exam is used to assess prospective social studies teachers.

WEST-E Social Studies Exam Outline

The WEST-E Social Studies exam contains 110 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split evenly into six content domains.

I. Civics (16%)

The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • The purposes and functions of laws, political systems, and governments
  • The organization of the US government
  • Key ideas and principles of democratic government in the US
  • The US election process
  • The rights and responsibilities of US citizenship
  • Principles of democratic civic involvement
  • Principles of international law
  • International relationships
  • The goals and execution of US foreign policy

II. Economics (12%)

The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Basic economic concepts
  • Examination of economic issues
  • The function of economic systems
  • Basic principles of international economics
  • The role of government in the US economic system

III. Geography (16%)

The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • The uses of globes, maps, and other geographic tools
  • The location and characteristics of major physical features of the earth
  • The human geography of places and regions
  • Interactions between humans, culture, and the environment
  • The geographic context of major global events and issues

IV. US History (20%)

The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Major developments in early US history from the precontact period to 1791
  • Major social, political, and economic developments from 1791 to 1877
  • Major social, political, and economic developments from 1877 to 1945
  • Major social, political, and economic developments from 1945 to the present
  • Major events, themes, developments, and individuals in Washington state history

V. World History (20%)

The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Major developments in world civilizations from 8000 BCE to 600 CE
  • Major developments from 600 to 1600
  • Major developments during the Era of Global Expansion and Encounter
  • Major developments during the Age of Revolutions
  • Major developments during the modern era

VI. Social Studies Concepts and Skills (16%)

The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Social studies terms, perspectives, and concepts
  • Locating social studies information
  • Analyzing and interpreting social studies information
  • Evaluating presentations of social studies data
  • Presenting social studies information
  • Communicating about social studies topics
  • Deliberating effectively with others

WEST-E Social Studies Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you will need to create a WEST account on their website. You will then need to choose whether to take the exam in-person at a testing center or remotely from home. Regardless of your testing method, the examination fee is $96.

Test Day

The day of your exam will look slightly different depending on which test-taking method you chose during registration.

In-person Testing

On test day, you should arrive at the testing center 15-30 minutes before the scheduled exam appointment. Once you arrive, you will begin the check-in process, which involves checking your ID and potentially taking your photograph for security purposes.

Before you enter the testing room, you will be asked to leave all personal items inside a secure locker outside of the room. This includes items like your cell phone, wallet, keys, hats, bags, and food.

Before the exam begins, you will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Once the NDA has been signed, the exam will begin.

Remote Testing

On test day, you should sign in to your account 15-30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. Once you sign in, you will be asked to provide your ID and sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

After the NDA has been signed, the remote proctor will ask you to scan your surroundings using your webcam. Once the proctor determines you are ready, the exam will begin.

How the WEST-E Social Studies Exam is Scored

The WEST-E Social Studies exam is scored using a scaled scoring system. This system takes your raw score, which is how many questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a number in a range of 100-300 points. The minimum scaled score you need in order to pass the exam is 240.
