What’s on the SSAT Upper Level Reading Section?

For this section, which is timed at 40 minutes, you will be given multiple reading passages that are 250-350 words each. You will then be asked to answer questions about each passage. These questions assess your ability to make inferences, locate details, make predictions, determine the author’s purpose and point of view, and recognize the main idea.

Reading passages may come from the following sources:

  • Literary fiction
  • Humanities (biography, art, poetry)
  • Science (anthropology, astronomy, medicine)
  • Social studies (history, sociology, economics)
