Praxis Agriculture Exam Outline

The Praxis Agriculture exam contain 120 selected-response questions and has a time limit of 2 hours.

The exam is split into seven content categories, which are designed to cover the various competencies and points of knowledge that an agriculture teacher should possess.

I. Agribusiness Systems (14 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Principles of capitalism and entrepreneurship in the agribusiness industry</li.
  • Management skills needed to organize an agribusiness
  • Record-keeping needed to accomplish agribusiness objectives
  • Generally-accepted accounting practices for making agribusiness decisions
  • Fundamentals of savings, investments, and credit in agribusiness
  • Marketing principles needed to accomplish agribusiness objectives

II. Animal Systems (20 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Historical developments and trends of the animal systems industry
  • Classification of animals
  • Physiological and anatomical characteristics of animals
  • Proper health care of animals
  • Basic principles of animal nutrition
  • Basic principles of animal production and management
  • Safety practices related to animal production
  • Normal and abnormal animal behavior
  • Proper design and use of animal facilities
  • Proper equipment for efficient and safe production
  • Principles and practices of basic animal reproduction
  • Effects of environmental conditions on animal production
  • Impacts of animal production on the environment
  • Issues related to animal welfare, animal rights, and producer responsibilities

III. Food Science and Biotechnology Systems (14 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Major issues and trends affecting the food products and processing industry
  • Industry organizations, regulatory agencies, and groups that affect the food products and processing industry
  • Safety principles and recommended equipment and facility management practices related to the food products and processing industry
  • Selecting, harvesting, processing, and classifying food products for storage, distribution, and consumption
  • Major innovations, historical developments, and applications of biotechnology in agriculture
  • Cultural, social, safety, environmental, legal, and ethical issues related to biotechnology
  • Safe laboratory procedures

IV. Environmental and Natural Resource Systems (16 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Natural cycles related to environmental and natural resource management
  • Chemical properties related to environmental and natural resources
  • The various ecosystems of the environment
  • Ecological concepts and principles related to natural resource systems
  • Current issues and regulations in environmental and natural resource management
  • Using personal protective equipment and safety procedures
  • The role of environmental and natural resource management in the national, state, and local economies
  • The impact of conventional and alternative energy sources on the environment
  • The wetlands and their role in the environment
  • The use, production, and processing of natural resources

V. Plant Systems (20 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Historical development of plant science and its relationship with society
  • General safety issues related to plant systems
  • Basic principles of identification, classification, physiology, and anatomy related to plant production and management
  • The influence of environmental factors on plant growth
  • Propagation, cultivation, and harvesting of plants
  • Basic characteristics of both soils and growing media and their uses
  • Using integrated pest management in plant production
  • Production and management practices associated with horticultural crops
  • Production and management practices associated with agronomic crops
  • Principles and elements of landscape and floral design

VI. Power, Structural, and Technical Systems (18 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Physical science principles and engineering applications associated with power, technical, and structural systems
  • Electricity and electrical wiring
  • Various power and energy sources
  • Principles of power, conversion, and energy transfer
  • Proper use, storage, and disposal of potentially hazardous materials
  • Safe operation and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment
  • Principles of small-engine operation, repair, and maintenance
  • Planning and building structures
  • Metal fabrication and welding
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing water systems
  • Application of technology to the agriculture industry
  • Using technical and mathematical approaches to map land, infrastructure, and facilities

VII. Leadership and Career Development (18 questions)

The questions in this category assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Principles of leadership
  • Foundational areas of career development
  • Purpose, function, and structure of the National FFA Organization
  • Team and individual leadership skills
  • Communication skills
  • Information research skills in making informed decisions
  • Supervised agricultural experiences
  • Career opportunities across the various pathways of agriculture
  • Local program planning and management

Praxis Agriculture Exam Registration

To register for the Praxis Agriculture exam, you will need to create an online account with ETS. Through this account, you can submit an application to take the exam.

During registration, you will be asked to select the test-taking format (remote or at a testing center), test location (if you are taking the test at a testing center), and test date. You will also need to pay the $130 exam fee.

Test Day

In-person Testing

You should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes before the scheduled testing appointment on test day. For this process, you will be asked to provide a printed copy of your admission ticket and two forms of valid identification.

You will also be asked to store all personal items, such as your cell phone, wallet, keys, and accessories, in a secure locker before entering the testing area.

Once the check-in process is complete and you are fully approved for testing, you will be led to the testing station and given a brief tutorial on the testing system.

Remote Testing

To take the exam remotely, you must use a laptop or desktop computer that has the ETS Secure Test Browser downloaded and installed on it. This is the browser you must use to take the exam. You will also need a functioning webcam, speakers, and a microphone.

When you check in to take the exam, the remote proctor will ask you to show proof of identification and to move your webcam around the room so that your testing area can be observed. Once the proctor has approved your testing area, they will walk you through the testing process and begin your exam.

How the Exam is Scored

Your Praxis Agriculture exam score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly (your raw score). Your raw score is converted to a scaled score. The scaled score you need to obtain differs slightly depending on which state you take the exam in, but most states require a minimum scaled score of 147.

You should receive an official score report about five weeks after testing.
