OSAT Elementary Education Exam Outline

The OSAT Elementary Education exam is comprised of two subtests. You may take each subtest individually at different times or both subtests in one sitting, but both must be taken and passed to obtain your teaching certification. You will be given a time limit of 4 hours for each testing appointment, whether you’re taking both subtests or just one.

Subtest 1: Reading/Language Arts

This subtest contains 52 selected-response questions and one constructed-response question.

The questions are grouped into two subareas, and each subarea covers a range of competencies:

1. Reading (55%)

• Foundations of literacy development
• Phonemic and phonological awareness
• The beginning stages of literacy development
• Alphabetic principle
• Phonics
• Spelling
• Later stages of literacy development
• Advanced phonics and spelling
• Development and assessment of fluency at all reading stages
• Vocabulary development and assessment
• Development and assessment of reading comprehension and supporting strategies for multiple formats
• Literary analysis
• Using informational and culturally relevant texts in the classroom
• Assessment of literature comprehension
• Informational text analysis
• Assessment of informational text comprehension

2. Language Arts (45%)

• Foundations of writing development and the elements of the writing process
• Strategies for producing developed, organized, and appropriate writing
• Fundamental elements of research
• Multimodal literacies

Subtest 2: Social Studies/Mathematics/Science/Health, Fitness, and the Arts

This subtest contains 66 selected-response questions.

The questions are grouped into four subareas, and each subarea covers a range of competencies:

1. Social Studies (26%)

• Social studies process skills
• Basic principles of government, economics, and civics
• Basic geometry principles
• Events and developments in the history of the world, the United States, and Oklahoma

2. Mathematics (31%)

• Number sense
• Operations
• Number systems
• Basic algebra
• Algebraic and proportional reasoning, equations, and expressions
• Measurement and geometry concepts
• Data analysis
• Probability concepts

3. Science (28%)

• Scientific inquiry
• Scientific engineering practicesFundamental concepts and core ideas of physical science
• Fundamental concepts and core ideas of Earth and space science
• Fundamental concepts and core ideas of life science

4. Health/Fitness and the Arts (15%)

• Health, fitness, and safety concepts and skills
• Basic genres, tools, materials, and cultural and historical traditions of visual art
• Basic genres and cultural and historical traditions of media arts and the performing arts

OSAT Elementary Education Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. Once your account has been created, you can use it to register for the exam and schedule an exam date. When you register, you will need to pay the $65 fee for each subtest.

Test Day

In-person Testing

On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled appointment. When you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and present a valid form of photo ID to the proctor. If you fail to bring your ID, you will not be able to take the exam.

Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they must be stored in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, wallet, keys, and accessories.

Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).

Remote Testing

On the day of your exam, you should log into your testing account 30 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time. The proctor will ask you to show a valid form of government-issued photo ID, and they will ask you to scan your surroundings using your webcam.

Once your exam begins, you cannot leave the webcam view, take breaks, or talk to yourself. Your focus must be on the exam, and other people must be out of your testing space while you take the exam.

Should the proctor determine that you are not following the guidelines for remote proctoring, your exam can be canceled, and your registration fees forfeited.

How the Exam is Scored

Your OSAT score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240 on each subtest, and you must pass both subtests to pass the full exam and receive your certification.

You will receive your official score report within four weeks after testing.
