NYSTCE School District Leader Exam Outline

The NYSTCE School District Leader exam is split into two parts, both of which must be taken and passed to pass the full exam. There are a total of 120 multiple-choice questions and four writing assignments on the exam.

You may take both parts in one session or take each part in individual sessions. Individual testing sessions are timed at 4 hours, while combined sessions are timed at 8 hours.

Part One (103)

This part of the exam is split into two subareas. Each subarea contains 30 multiple-choice questions and one writing assignment.

Developing, communicating, and sustaining an educational vision (42%)
  • Leadership concepts and principles
  • Processes for developing and implementing a shared, sustainable educational vision for the district
  • Understand principles and practices of clear and effective communication
  • Processes of collaboration and cooperation
Supervising districtwide change and accountability (58%)
  • The process of change and its management in the educational environment
  • Comprehensive, long-range planning and implementation
  • Data-driven decision-making and problem-solving skills and procedures
  • Promoting accountability

Part Two (105)

This part of the exam is also split into two subareas. Each subarea contains one writing assignment and some number of multiple-choice questions.

Leading the district educational program (64%)
  • Understanding and supporting learning throughout the district
  • Procedures for establishing and promoting standards and expectations
  • Effective methods for providing support to students
  • Effective methods for providing support to building leaders, teachers, and other staff
  • Effective strategies for fostering ongoing staff development and sustaining personal professional growth
Managing district resources and compliance (36%)
  • District-level operational management
  • District financial and facilities management
  • Supervising compliance with local, state, and federal mandates

NYSTCE School District Leader Exam Registration

To register for the NYSTCE School District Leader exam, you will need to create an NYSTCE account online and complete the registration process there. It is recommended that you complete the registration process at least 30 days before you take the exam.

During this process, you will be asked some questions about your educational history, as well as your current education level, first language, matriculation status, and the education code for the NYC Department of Education program type you are associated with.

Test Day

On exam day, you should arrive at the testing center 15-30 minutes earlier than the scheduled exam time to allow time for the check-in process. Once you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide a valid form of government-issued photo ID.

Before the exam begins, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, keys, wallet, accessories, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.

Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.

How the Exam is Scored

Your total score is based on the number of questions you answered correctly, which is then reported as a numerical figure in the range of 100-300. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
