NYSTCE School Building Leader Exam Outline

The NYSTCE School Building Leader exam is administered in two parts as two separate tests. Overall, the exam contains 67 selected-response questions and 6 performance tasks, and you will have a total of 8 hours to complete the exam.

Part One

The first part of the exam contains 41 selected-response questions, one extended performance task, and two shorter performance tasks, and you will have 4 hours to complete this part.

The items in this part are grouped into two competencies:

1. Instructional Leadership for Student Success

Questions: 25 | Tasks: 1

The questions in this competency assess your ability to lead the development, articulation, and implementation of a shared vision of well-being and high-level learning for students. You are also tested on your ability to use assessment data to appropriately monitor instructional outcomes, analyze trends and patterns, and support continuous improvement.

2. School Culture and Learning Environment

Questions: 16 | Tasks: 2

The questions in this competency assess your ability to develop and sustain a culture of continuous improvement, high expectations, inclusivity, support, equity, caring, and trust. You are also tested on your ability to serve as a model of respectful, professional, culturally responsive, and ethical behavior.

Part Two

The second part of the exam contains 26 selected-response questions, two extended performance tasks, and one shorter performance task, and you will have 4 hours to complete this part.

The items in this part are grouped into three competencies:

1. Developing Human Capital

Questions: 25 | Tasks: 2

The questions in this competency assess your ability to recruit and retain a diverse and educationally effective faculty, as well as foster continual improvement in student achievement. You are also tested on your ability to use effective evaluation and observation practices, model a culture of professional growth, and oversee the development of a professional learning community.

2. Family and Community Engagement

Questions: 10 | Tasks: 1

The questions in this competency assess your ability to ensure the accessibility of the school, its faculty, and its staff to the community. You are also tested on your ability to communicate effectively, recognize various resources in the community, advocate for student and family needs, and create partnerships that are beneficial to parents and students.

3. Operational Systems, Data Systems, and Legal Guidelines

Questions: 16 | Tasks: 0

The questions in this competency assess your ability to monitor and maintain effective technological, operations, fiscal, and administrative systems and practices. You are also tested on your ability to adhere to legal requirements and ensure that student academic success and well-being are supported by all systems and practices.

Exam Registration

To register for the School Building Leader exam, you will need to create an NYSTCE account online and complete the registration process there. It is recommended that you complete the registration process at least 30 days before you take the exam.

During this time, you must choose whether you are going to take both parts of the test in one sitting or just one part. The examination fee will differ depending on what you choose:

Test Day

On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center 15-30 minutes earlier than the scheduled exam time. After you arrive, you will be asked to provide a valid form of photo ID.

Before the exam begins, you will be asked to place all personal items (phone, calculator, books, notes, bag/backpack, hat, food, highlighters, recording devices, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.

You will be given a 15-minute tutorial on the testing system before your exam begins, and you will be asked to sign an NDA. If you are taking both parts of the test in one sitting, there will be an additional 45-minute break for lunch between parts.

How the Exam is Scored

Your total score is reported within the range of 400-600 and is based on your performance on both parts of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 520.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score and your pass/fail status.
