The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Music Education test is required of all teacher candidates wishing to teach music in Michigan secondary schools.

MTTC Music Education Exam Outline

The MTTC Music Education exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into five subareas.

I. Listening Skills (26%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Elements of a melody in a musical performance
  • Elements of harmony in a musical performance
  • Elements of rhythm and tempo in a musical performance
  • Form, structure, style, texture, and expressive elements in a musical performance
  • Historical and cultural context and characteristics of a musical performance
  • The relationship between the written score and the musical performance

II. Music Theory (16%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Elements of melody
  • Elements of harmony
  • Elements of rhythm and tempo
  • Form, texture, style, and expressive elements in music

III. Music History (16%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Development of European music from the Middle Ages to 1750
  • Development of European music from 1750 to the present
  • Musics in the Americas and their cultural and historical contexts
  • World musics within their cultural contexts

IV. Music Creation and Performance (16%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Techniques used in composition, improvisation, arrangement, and adaptation of music
  • Elements of singing and vocal performance
  • Instruments and instrumental performance
  • Rehearsal and conducting skills for musical ensembles

V. Music Education (26%)

  • The professional context of music education
  • Music pedagogy for general music and performance classes
  • Music instruction for all music learners
  • The importance of an environment conducive to the learning and performance of music
  • The use of technology in music and music education
  • Careers in music
  • The profession of a music educator

MTTC Music Education Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC Music Education exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

On exam day, you should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the MTTC Music Education Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Music Education score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
