The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Biology test is required of all teacher candidates wishing to teach biology in Michigan secondary schools.

MTTC Biology Exam Outline

The MTTC Biology exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into five subareas.

I. Foundations of Scientific Inquiry (19%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Principles and procedures for conducting scientific research
  • Methods and materials used in scientific investigations
  • The nature and history of scientific thought and inquiry
  • The relationship of biology to contemporary, technological, societal, and historical issues
  • Interrelationships among the physical, life, and earth and space sciences

II. Cellular Function (15%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Cell theory
  • Cellular structure and function
  • Physiological processes of cells
  • Basic chemical components and reactions of cells
  • The process of cell division, growth, and differentiation

III. Heredity and evolutionary Changes (22%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Concepts and principles of Mendelian genetics
  • Concepts and principles of molecular genetics
  • Techniques and applications of modern genetics
  • Concepts and principles of population genetics
  • Processes of evolutionary change
  • Characteristics of ancient life and related evidence

IV. Organization of Living Things (22%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Characteristics of living organisms
  • The life cycles of organisms
  • The structures, organization, and functions of systems in organisms
  • Processes used by organisms to obtain, store, and use matter and energy to maintain homeostasis
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Characteristics of human diseases and immunology

V. Ecological Systems (22%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Characteristics of populations and communities
  • Factors that influence human population growth and diversity
  • The transfer of energy in ecosystems
  • Biogeochemical cycles
  • The effects of natural phenomena and human activities on ecosystems
  • Resource use and management by humans

MTTC Biology Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC Biology exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. When you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the MTTC Biology Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Biology score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
