Exam Outline
The ILTS Speech-Language Pathologist: Nonteaching exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.
The exam is split into five subareas.
1. Foundations of Communication (19 questions)
The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Characteristics and features of typical and atypical speech and language development
- Principles of speech and language science
- The role of cognitive, cultural, and social aspects of language on language development and communication skills
2. Students with Communication Disorders (31 questions)
The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Prevention and intervention techniques for students who are underperforming or at risk of developing communication disorders
- Characteristics and etiologies of speech disorders
- Characteristics of disorders of receptive and expressive language
- Characteristics of hearing impairments and their effects on speech and language development
- Characteristics of neurogenic/neurological disorders and swallowing and feeding disorders
3. Assessment of Communication Disorders (19 questions)
The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Characteristics, limitations, and uses of formal and informal assessments
- Applying accepted procedures for assessing students’ speech and language
- Strategies for interpreting and communicating assessment results
4. Program Planning and Intervention for Students with Communication Disorders (19 questions)
The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Instructional practices for students with speech disorders
- Instructional practices for students with receptive and expressive language disorders
- Instructional practices for students with hearing impairments
5. Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities (12 questions)
The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Working and collaborating with family, school, and relevant local community professionals
- The roles and professional and ethical responsibilities of a speech language pathologist

To register for the exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, log in and select the Speech-Language Pathologist: Nonteaching (232) exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $122 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.
Test Day
You should arrive about 30 minutes early to the testing center on test day to allow time for the check-in process. After you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID.
You will be asked to place all personal items in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.
Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.
How the Exam is Scored
Your ILTS Speech-Language Pathologist score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score from 100 to 300. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240.
