ILTS School Counselor Exam Outline

The ILTS School Counselor exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The exam is split into four subareas.

1. Human Development and Learning (25 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Theories, principles, and processes of human growth and development
  • Learning theories, processes, and needs related to academic development
  • Theories, processes, and needs related to personal/social development
  • Career theories
  • College and career readiness
  • The world of work

2. Assessment, Instruction, and Services (37 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Assessment principles, tools, and practices relevant to the school counseling program
  • Instructional planning and delivery
  • The developmental school counseling curriculum
  • Principles, strategies, and processes for individual counseling and education planning
  • Principles, strategies, and processes for group counseling in the educational setting
  • Crisis prevention and intervention for students, families, and communities
  • Consultation and collaboration within the community and the school

3. The School Counseling Program (19 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Issues pertaining to change and diversity
  • The development, organization, and management of the school counseling program
  • Research methods and program evaluation related to the school counseling program

4. The Professional School Counselor (19 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • History, philosophy, issues, and trends pertaining to school counseling
  • Educational systems and organizations
  • Techniques for providing systems support
  • Professional orientation and identity of the school counselor

ILTS School Counselor Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, log in and select the School Counseling (235) exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $122 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.

Test Day

You should arrive about 30 minutes early to the testing center on test day to allow time for the check-in process. When you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID.

You will then be asked to place all personal items in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.

Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.

How the ILTS School Counselor Exam is Scored

Your ILTS School Counselor score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score from 100 to 300. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240.
