Knowing how to convert fractions is an important math concept to understand!

Take a look at these examples to see how each conversion works:

Fraction to Decimal

Simple

💡 Convert \(\frac{3}{4}\) to a decimal.

To convert a fraction to a decimal, you just need to divide the numerator by the denominator. In this case, we need to divide 3 by 4.

\(3 \div 4=0.75\)

Therefore, \(\frac{3}{4}\) is equal to 0.75 as a decimal. It’s as easy as that!

Advanced

💡 Convert \(\frac{3}{8}\) to a decimal.

Just like the last example, you just need to divide the numerator by the denominator. In this case, we need to divide 3 by 8.

Because 8 doesn’t go into 3, we need to add a decimal point and a zero to 3, making it 3.0. Then, we can perform long division:

Therefore, \(\frac{3}{8}\) is equal to 0.375 as a decimal!

Fraction to Percentage

Simple

💡 Convert \(\frac{3}{8}\) to a percentage.

To convert a fraction to a percentage, we first need to convert it to a decimal (see above).

\(3 \div 8=0.375\)

Then, we need to multiply the decimal by 100, which moves the decimal point two places to the right:

\(0.375 \times 100 = 37.5\)

Therefore, \(\frac{3}{8}\) is equal to 37.5%!

Advanced

💡 Convert \(\frac{12}{16}\) to a percentage.

To convert a fraction to a percentage, it’s often helpful to simplify the fraction first.

To simplify, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of 12 and 16, which is 4. Then, divide both the numerator and denominator by 4.

\(12 \div 4 = 3\)
\(16 \div 4 = 4\)

This means that \(\frac{12}{16}\) simplifies to \(\frac{3}{4}\).

Now we can follow the usual steps of converting the fraction to a decimal and multiplying that by 100:

\(3 \div 4 = 0.75\)
\(0.75 \times 100 = 75\)

Therefore, \(\frac{12}{16}\) is equal to 75%!
