CGRN Exam Outline
The CGRN certification exam contains 175 multiple-choice questions, 25 of which are unscored, and you will be given a time limit of 4 hours.
The exam is split into four ABCGN practice domains.
1. General Nursing Care (21%)
The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Assessing, analyzing, and monitoring a patient’s health status via evidence-based practice
- Developing a plan of care and educating based on the patient’s level of understanding
2. Gastroenterological Procedures (35%)
The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Collaborating with the healthcare team during endoscopic procedures to provide safe care
- Collaborating with the healthcare team during non-endoscopic procedures to provide safe care
3. Patient Care Interventions (25%)
The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Recognizing and responding to emergent changes in patient status to prevent complications and maximize positive outcomes
- Promoting wellness by managing GI healthcare needs
- Administering medications and fluids to provide safe care
4. Environmental Safety, Infection Prevention and Control (19%)
The questions in this domain are designed to assess your knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Implementing procedure-related environmental safety, infection prevention, and control
- Implementing environmental safety, infection prevention, and control in gastroenterology

To register for the exam, you must first submit an application via the ABCGN website. This application must include the examination fee, which is $430 for SGNA members and $520 for non-members.
Once your application has been approved, you will receive confirmation and information about scheduling your exam appointment with Prometric.
Test Day
In-person Testing
You should arrive at the testing center 15-30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete the check-in process. Upon arrival, you will be asked to present one valid, government-issued ID with a signature. Your first and last name on the ID must match the first and last name you registered under.
Writing utensils, beverages and snacks, electronic devices (cell phones, smart watches, etc.), and resource materials are prohibited. An online scratchpad tool is provided in the test program for note-taking.
Once you have completed the pre-test procedures, you are directed to your testing station, and your test begins.
Remote Testing
You should sign into the test delivery platform 15-30 minutes before your appointment to leave time for checking in and troubleshooting any technical issues. You will need the confirmation number from the email you received after registering, and you must present one valid, government-issued ID with a signature to the proctor. Your first and last name on the ID must match the first and last name you registered under.
Before beginning the exam, the proctor will direct you to move the webcam around your testing space, and your clothing will be inspected visually. You may be asked to pull your hair back, roll your sleeves up and turn your pockets inside out.
Once the proctor is satisfied with your space and workstation and you have completed the pre-test activities, your exam begins.
Scoring
Your CGRN score is determined using a scaled scoring system. This system takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score from 200 to 800. The minimum score you need to pass the exam is 450.
