MTEL Communication and Literacy Exam Outline
The MTEL Communication Literacy Skills exam is split into two subtests, both of which must be passed in order to pass the full exam. You will be given a total time limit of 4 hours, whether you take one subtest or both subtests together.
Reading Subtest
This subtest contains 42 multiple-choice questions, which are grouped into six objectives. Each objective contains between 6 and 8 questions.

- Relationships Among Ideas
- Critical Reasoning
- Outlining, Summarizing, Graph Interpretation
Writing Subtest
This subtest contains 35 multiple-choice questions, seven sentence-correction questions, and two open-response questions, all of which are grouped into six objectives. Each objective contains anywhere from 1 to 16 questions.

To register for the exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. Once your account has been created, you can use it to register for the exam and schedule an exam date. When you register, you will need to pay the applicable examination fee:

Test Day
You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes early on the day of your testing appointment to allow time for the check-in process. Upon arrival, you will be asked to sign in and provide at least one form of valid photo ID.
After the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to leave all personal items (cell phone, keys, wallet, bags, etc.) in a locker outside the testing area.
Once you enter the testing room, you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system before the exam begins.
How the Exam is Scored
Your MTEL score is determined by using a scaled scoring method, which means your final score is placed on a scale of 100-300.
To pass the exam, you must achieve a minimum scaled score of 240 on each subtest.
