Code of Ethics for Personal Trainers
A code of ethics represents some basic guidelines for behavior that members of a given profession adhere to. Many professional organizations may even require you agree to a code in order to join their association.
The goal of a code of ethics is to ensure clients receive a certain level of quality experience and assistance from any certified trainers. A code of ethics can help:
- Provide safe and effective instruction.
- Provide fair treatment to clients.
- Ensure trainers are up-to-date on the latest best practices for health and fitness research
- Maintain current CPR and AED certificates and knowledge of first-aid services.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all client information.
- Refer clients to more doctors or other medical professionals when appropriate.
- Establish and maintain clear professional boundaries.
Each professional organization of personal trainers has a unique code of conduct and ethics. Though they all vary, they share the same purpose: to protect clients and ensure quality of training. Everyone wants safe and professional relationships, even at the gym. So, when you get a new client, ensure that you go over the code of conduct with them, so they know what to expect from you, and then stick to it!
I hope that makes sense as to why there are codes of conduct and ethics within personal training, and I hope you stick to yours.
Thanks so much for watching!
