Exam Outline

The ILTS Social Science History exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The exam is split into four subareas.

1. Social Science Foundational Skills (20 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your ability to understand the following:

  • Basic tools, sources, and methods of social science inquiry
  • Interdisciplinary connections among the social sciences
  • Using analysis, interpretation, and evaluation in social science inquiry
  • Basic historical concepts
  • The process of reading
  • Strategies for promoting reading development in the social science classroom

2. Social Science Foundational Knowledge (40 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your ability to understand the following:

  • Political concepts, features, processes, and systems in the US and across the world
  • Economic systems and concepts
  • The operation of the US and world economies
  • Personal finance
  • Major developments and patterns of continuity and change in world, US, and Illinois history
  • Tools, processes, and concepts of human and physical geography
  • Theories, concepts, and terms related to human behavior and development
  • The structure and organization of human societies
  • The processes of social interaction

3. Historical Concepts and World History (17 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your ability to understand the following:

  • Historical concepts, interpretations, and perspectives
  • The prehistory of human civilization
  • Development of world civilizations from 1000 BCE to 1500 CE
  • Major intellectual, geopolitical, social, and economic developments and change in world history from 1450 to 1850
  • Major intellectual, geopolitical, social, and economic developments and change in world history from 1850 to the present

4. US and Illinois History (23 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your ability to understand the following:

  • The development of colonial settlements in North America
  • The Revolutionary War
  • Creation of the US government
  • Developments of the early national and Jacksonian periods
  • Westward expansion
  • The Civil War
  • Reconstruction
  • Major political, diplomatic, military, and economic developments and changes in the US from the end of Reconstruction to 1914
  • Political and diplomatic developments, social movements, patterns of continuity and change, and economic trends in the US from WWI to the present
  • Major developments in Illinois history

Registration

To register for the exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, log in and select the Social Science: History (246) exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $122 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.

Test Day

On testing day, you should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment. After you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID.

Before the exam begins, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, wallet, keys, bags, accessories, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.

Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.

How the Exam is Scored

Your ILTS Social Science History score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score from 100 to 300. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240.
