Exam Outline
The AEPA Early Childhood Education exam contains 100 selected-response questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.
The exam is split into three subareas.
I. Child Development and Learning (24%)
The questions in this subarea are designed to assess your knowledge of the following:
- Human growth and development
- Factors that may affect children’s development and learning
- Integrated curriculum design that reflects the ways children construct knowledge
II. Communication, Language, and Literacy Development (38%)
The questions in this subarea are designed to assess your knowledge of the following:
- Second-language acquisition
- Facilitating the English language development of young children with diverse linguistic backgrounds
- The development of concepts about print
- Foundations of reading development
- Writing processes
III. Learning in the Content Areas (38%)
The questions in this subarea are designed to assess your knowledge of the following:
- Mathematics concepts and skills
- Facilitating learning for young children in the area of mathematics
- Science content and inquiry processes
- Facilitating science learning for young children
- Social studies content and skills
- Facilitating social studies learning for young children
- The visual and performing arts
- Facilitating young children’s learning in and appreciation of the arts

To register for the exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. Once your account has been created, you can use it to register for the AEPA Early Childhood Education exam and schedule an exam date. When you register, you will need to pay the $119 exam fee.
Test Day
On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes early to allow time for the check-in process. When you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide at least one form of valid photo ID.
After the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a locker outside the testing area.
Once you enter the testing room, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system before the exam begins.
How the Exam is Scored
Your Early Childhood Education test results are reported as scaled scores based on your total raw score points from both the multiple-choice section and the constructed-response section. Your raw scores are converted to a scale of 100 to 300, with the scaled score of 240 being the minimum passing score on each subtest. Both subtests must be passed in order to pass the full exam.
Generally, it takes around two to three weeks after the last day of the examination period before you receive your test results.
