NES Art Exam Outline

The NES Art exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours.

The exam is split into five content domains.

I. Foundations of Art: Elements and Principles (11%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • The elements of art
  • The principles of design

II. Art Media, Tools, Technologies, Techniques, and Processes (33%)

The questions in this domain cover the media, tools, technologies, techniques, and processes used for the following:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Photography
  • Video/film art
  • Multimedia arts
  • Design arts
  • Functional arts

III. Visual Arts in Historical and Cultural Contexts (33%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • The purposes and functions of art in cultures and societies throughout history
  • The relation of works of art and architecture to their historical context
  • The influence of art from various cultures and historical periods on art from other cultures and periods
  • Distinguishing characteristics of art from various cultures and historical periods
  • The potential influence of visual images on current cultural and societal issues

IV. Aesthetics and Art Criticism (12%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Aesthetic concepts
  • Critical analysis and interpretation of artworks

V. Connecting the Visual Arts to Other Disciplines (11%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Connections between visual arts and other disciplines
  • Career and opportunities for lifelong learning in the visual arts

NES Art Exam Registration

To register for the NES Art exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.

The testing fee for this exam is $95.

Test Day

On exam day, you should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center about 30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin. Once you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.

Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be left at home or in your car. This includes your phone and any accessories.

Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).

How the NES Art Exam is Scored

Your NES Art score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220.
