The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Political Science test is required of all teacher candidates wishing to teach political science in the state of Michigan.

MTTC Political Science Exam Outline

The MTTC Political Science exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into four subareas.

I. Political Science Concepts and Skills (15%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Political science terms and concepts
  • Different forms of contemporary and historical government
  • Conducting political science research
  • Analyzing and interpreting political science information

II. Foundations and Operation of Government in the United States (40%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Fundamental principles of the US government
  • The principles and operation of the US legal system
  • Local and state government
  • The organization, operation, and functions of local and state government in Michigan
  • International relations
  • The formation and execution of US foreign policy

III. The Political Process and US Citizenship (15%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Political parties in the US
  • The electoral process in the US
  • The rights and responsibilities of US citizenship

IV. Interdisciplinary Perspectives (30%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The relationship between history and political science
  • The relationships between geography and political science
  • The relationship between economics and political science
  • Core democratic values
  • The rights and responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society
  • Analyzing public policy questions

MTTC Political Science Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC Political Science exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled exam time, which will allow time for the check-in process to take place. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, wallet, keys, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Political Science score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
