The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) English test is required of all teacher candidates wishing to teach English in the state of Michigan.

MTTC English Exam Outline

The MTTC English exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into four subareas.

I. Meaning and Communication (20%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The integrated nature of the English language arts
  • The dynamicity of the English language
  • The acquisition and use of language
  • The reflection of language on culture
  • The effects of language on meaning in all modes of communication
  • The complementary nature of listening and speaking
  • Listening and speaking strategies used for effective communication for different purposes

II. Literature and Understanding (26%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The distinctive features of various genres
  • Recurrent themes in all genres
  • Various purposes for studying literature
  • Historical, cultural, and social aspects of literature
  • Various aspects of North American literature
  • Various aspects of world literature
  • Various aspects of world literature in translation
  • Characteristics of literature written for children and adolescents
  • Varied critical approaches to textual analysis and criticism

III. Genre and Craft of Language (30%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The structure of language
  • Approaches to reading for literary response
  • Forms, techniques, and stylistic requirements of writing to impart and explain information
  • Forms, techniques, and stylistic requirements of writing literary response and analysis
  • Forms, techniques, and stylistic requirements of persuasive writing
  • Forms, techniques, and stylistic requirements of writing for personal and artistic expression and social interaction
  • The writing process
  • Purposes and processes of revising and editing written texts
  • Active and constructive nature of viewing and visually representing information

IV. Skills and Processes (24%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The acquisition, interpretation, and application of information
  • The use of metacognitive techniques in reading comprehension
  • Techniques of critical analysis and evaluation
  • Eliciting and using readers’ responses to texts
  • The connection between writing and learning across the curriculum
  • The influence of the mode of representation on the content of communication
  • The critical evaluation of information, media, and technology

MTTC English Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC English exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the MTTC English Exam is Scored

Your MTTC English score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
