The Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) is a series of content and application-based exams for the state of Florida that provides prospective educators the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in general education and subject area knowledge.

The FTCE Elementary Education K-6 exam is one of seven exams developed by the state of Florida to reflect the state’s requirements, aligned with the student content standards approved by the Florida State Board.

FTCE Elementary Education Exam Outline

This exam is made up of four subtests, each assessing a different subject. Altogether, the exam contains 175 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 4.5 hours.

1. Language Arts and Reading (50 questions)

In this subtest, which is timed at 65 minutes, you will be tested on your knowledge of the following:

  • The reading process (35%)
  • Texts and text analysis (17%)
  • Literary instruction and assessments (20%)
  • Communication and media literacy (14%)
  • The writing process (14%)

2. Social Science (45 questions)

In this subtest, which is timed at 65 minutes, you will be tested on your knowledge of the following:

  • Government and citizenship (20%)
  • Effective instructional practices (19%)
  • Production, distribution, and consumption (17%)
  • Time, continuity, and change (26%)
  • People, places, and environment (18%)

3. Science (45 questions)

In this subtest, which is timed at 70 minutes, you will be tested on your knowledge of the following:

  • Earth and space (19%)
  • Physical sciences (20%)
  • Effective science instruction (20%)
  • Life science (23%)
  • The nature of science (18%)

4. Mathematics (35 questions)

In this subtest, which is timed at 70 minutes, you will be tested on your knowledge of the following:

  • Decimals, integers, and fractions in base-10 (29%)
  • Algebraic reasoning (15%)
  • Geometric concepts (15%)
  • Measurement, data analysis, and statistics (14%)
  • Student reasoning and instructional practices (27%)

FTCE Elementary Education Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must first create an FTCE/FELE account. Once you are logged in, select “Elementary Education K-6” as your exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.

The fee for all subtests taken together is $150. If you split up the testing sessions, the fees vary from subtest to subtest:

Test Day

On the day of the exam, you should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled appointment time. After you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID, one of which must be a photo ID. Your digital photograph will then be taken, and a biometric scan of your palm vein will be taken for identification and security purposes.

Before the exam begins, you will be asked to place all personal items in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be briefly removed and inspected before you enter the testing room.

Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.

How the FTCE Elementary Education Exam is Scored

Your score is calculated using a scaled scoring method. This method works by taking the number of questions you answered correctly (your “raw” score) and converting it to a scaled score. To pass, you will need to achieve a scaled score of at least 200 per subtest, and you must pass all four subtests to pass the exam.

You will receive your official score report within four weeks after testing.

Retaking the FTCE Elementary Education Exam

If you failed the exam, you may retake it after re-registering and paying the testing fee(s) again.
