Maternal Newborn Nursing Exam Eligibility
To be eligible to take the Maternal Newborn Nursing exam, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have a current RN license in the United States or Canada that is active and unencumbered.
- You must have at least 24 months of specialty experience. The experience can have occurred at any time during your RN career.
- You must have been employed in the specialty sometime during the previous 24 months.
Maternal Newborn Nursing Exam Outline
The Maternal Newborn Nursing exam contains 175 multiple-choice questions, 25 of which are unscored, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours. The unscored questions, known as “pretest” questions, are used by the exam administrators to validate the questions for future exams.
The questions on the exam are split into five content areas:
1. Pregnancy, Birth Risk Factors, and Complications (7%)
The questions in this area assess your knowledge of the following:
- Antenatal factors
- Intrapartum factors
2. Maternal Postpartum Assessment, Management, and Education (26%)
The questions in this area assess your knowledge of the following:
- Physiologic changes and physical assessment
- Nursing care
- Lactation
- Psychosocial and ethical issues
- Newborn feeding and nutrition
3. Newborn Assessment and Management (19%)
The questions in this area assess your knowledge of the following:
- Transition to extrauterine life
- Physical assessment and gestational age assessment
- Newborn care and family education
- Resuscitation and stabilization
4. Maternal Postpartum Complications (24%)
The questions in this area assess your knowledge of the following:
- Hematologic
- Cardiovascular
- Infection
- Diabetes
- Mood and substance use disorders
5. Newborn Complications (24%)
The questions in this area assess your knowledge of the following:
- Cardiovascular and respiratory
- Neurological and gastrointestinal
- Hematologic
- Infectious disease
- Genetic, metabolic, and endocrine

To register for the exam, you must create an online account at the NCC website and submit an application. You will also need to submit the $50 application fee.
Once your application has been approved, you will receive an email containing your eligibility letter and all of the information you need to register for and schedule your exam. During the registration process, you will need to pay the $275 examination fee.
Test Day
In-person Testing
You should arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes before your exam is scheduled to begin. If you arrive late, your exam will be canceled, and you will not receive a refund of your examination fees.
Once you arrive, you will be asked for your eligibility letter and two valid forms of identification. One form of ID must be a government-issued photo ID, and the other must simply contain your name and signature.
No personal items are allowed in the testing room, so any items that you bring with you must be left in a secure locker outside the testing room before the exam begins.
Once you enter the testing area, you will be given the opportunity to take a practice exam to become familiar with the computer and exam format. After the practice exam is over, the real exam will begin.
Remote Testing
Before you log in to take your exam, you must clear your testing area of all electronics, books, notes, and recording devices. You must also be sure that people will not come and go during your exam. Your exam could be canceled if the proctor sees anyone else in the room but you.
Once your testing area is ready, sign on and follow the procedures provided.
How the Maternal Newborn Nursing Exam is Scored
The Maternal Newborn Nursing exam is scored using a criterion-referenced scoring method, meaning that a team of subject-matter experts (The NCC Board of Directors) has decided upon a baseline standard that all test-takers must meet in order to pass the exam.
You will receive your scores within 15 business days after you finish the exam.
