NES Social Science Exam Outline

The NES Social Science exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a 3-hour time limit.

The exam is split into five content domains.

I. Historiography and World History (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Historical concepts, perspectives, source, terms, and research skills
  • Major developments in world history from the beginnings of society to 1350 CE
  • Major developments in world history from 1350 o 1871
  • Major developments in world history from 1871 to the present

II. US History (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Major developments in US history from the precontract period to 1789
  • Major developments in US history from 1789 to 1877
  • Major developments in US history from 1877 to 1929
  • Major developments in US history from 1929 to the present

III. Geography and Culture (19%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Geographic terms, sources, concepts, and research skills
  • Physical features and systems
  • The interaction between human societies and the environment
  • Human systems

IV. Government (19%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Political science terms, perspectives, concepts, and research skills
  • The foundations of US government, the US political process, and the rights and responsibilities of US citizenship
  • The structure, organization, and operation of different levels of government in the US

V. Economics (12%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Basic economic concepts
  • Microeconomics
  • Consumer economics and personal finance
  • Macroeconomics
  • International economics

NES Social Science Exam Registration

To register for the NES Social Science exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.

The testing fee for this exam is $95.

Test Day

You should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center 30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin. This will give you enough time to complete the check-in process. When you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.

Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be left at home or in your car.

Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).

How the NES Social Science Exam is Scored

Your NES Social Science score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220.
