Exam Outline

The MTTC Integrated Science (Secondary) exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into four subareas.

I. Constructing and Reflecting on Science Knowledge (25%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The principles and procedures for conducting scientific research
  • Methods and equipment used in scientific investigations
  • The nature and history of scientific thought and inquiry
  • The relationship of science and technology to societal, historical, and contemporary issues
  • Interrelationships among the physical, life, and Earth/space sciences

II. Life Sciences (25%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Cell structure and function
  • The organization, functions, and characteristics of living things
  • Characteristics of human biology
  • Heredity and modern genetics
  • Evolutionary change of life on Earth
  • Characteristics of ecological systems

III. Earth/Space Sciences (25%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Characteristics of the lithosphere
  • The history and processes of the changing Earth
  • Characteristics of the hydrosphere
  • The Earth’s atmosphere, climate, and weather
  • Features of the universe
  • The methods of astronomy

IV. Physical Sciences (25%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The chemical properties of matter
  • The nature of chemical changes in matter
  • The physical properties of matter
  • The ideal gas laws
  • The nature of physical changes in terms of molecular behavior
  • The concepts of mechanics
  • The concepts of electricity and magnetism
  • Basic concepts of energy and thermodynamics
  • The characteristics of waves and vibrations
  • The properties of light and sound

Registration

To register for the MTTC Integrated Science (Secondary) exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center 15-30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time on test day. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Integrated Science (Secondary) score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
