MTTC Early Childhood Education Exam Outline

The MTTC Early Childhood Education (General and Special Education) exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into four subareas.

I. Child Development and Learning (25%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The development of children from birth through age 8
  • Factors that influence development and learning
  • Creating learning environments that promote the development, learning, and well-being of all children
  • Types, benefits, uses, and goals of assessments to promote the development and learning of all children

II. Communication, Language, and Literacy Development (19%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Communication and language development in children from birth through age 8
  • Promoting communication development
  • The foundations of literacy development in children from birth through age 8
  • Creating a literacy-rich environment that motivates young children’s interest in reading
  • Fostering early literacy development
  • Writing processes and strategies for developing young children’s writing competence

III. Learning in the Content Areas (37%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Mathematics, science, social studies, and arts concepts, processes, and skills
  • Promoting mathematical, science, social studies, and arts learning in children
  • Health, safety, and physical activities for children from birth through age 8
  • Promoting young children’s learning about lifelong health and safety

IV. Professional Development (19%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Building positive, collaborative relationships with the families of children
  • Establishing and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships with other professionals and community agencies and organizations
  • The legal, professional, and ethical roles and responsibilities involved in the education of children from birth through age 8

MTTC Early Childhood Education Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC Early Childhood Education (General and Special Education) exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time to allow time for the check-in process. When you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

Then, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Early Childhood Education (General and Special Education) score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
