ILTS Physical Education Exam Outline

The ILTS Physical Education exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The exam is split into four subareas.

1. Motor Skills and Movement Activities (28 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Principles and critical elements of motor development and motor learning
  • Movement concepts and patterns
  • Biomechanical principles
  • Developing locomotor, non-locomotor, object control, rhythmic, creative movement, and dance skills
  • Techniques, activities, basic rules, equipment, skill progressions, organizational strategies, etiquette, and safety practices for sports and activities

2. Health-Related Fitness (22 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Physiology concepts related to health and physical activity
  • Developing and maintaining healthy levels of cardiorespiratory endurance
  • Developing and maintaining muscular strength and endurance and joint flexibility
  • Principles of nutrition
  • Developing and maintaining healthy levels of body composition

3. Student Growth, Development, and Learning (22 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • The social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and learning of students
  • The role of physical activity in the development of positive personal and social attitudes and behaviors
  • The role of physical education in the development of critical-thinking, decision-making, goal-setting, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills
  • Instructional management and motivation in physical education settings

4. The Physical Education Program (28 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Physical education curriculum development
  • The evaluation of physical education programs
  • Planning, developing, and implementing developmentally appropriate instructional strategies
  • Using formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate student learning and progress
  • Legal, ethical, and professional issues and responsibilities in physical education
  • Effective advocacy, communication, and collaboration

ILTS Physical Education Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, log in and select the Physical Education (213) exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $122 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.

Test Day

You should arrive about 15-30 minutes early to the testing center on test day. After you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, keys, wallet, accessories, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.

Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.

How the ILTS Physical Education Exam is Scored

Your ILTS Physical Education score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score from 100 to 300. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240.
